Coquet Island is a small island, around 6 hectares in size, located around 1 mile off the coast of Amble.
We headed out for the day and parked in a free car park around 1/2 a mile from the harbour. Braid car park (Whats3Words: ///shrub.window.tactical) is perfect if you have a camper, with dedicated spots for overnight parking for only £12. Located next to the yacht club and Coquet Shorebase Trust. A good place to check out if you fancy taking part in some water based activities.
We walked straight over to the Beach Hut shops to book our ticket on Puffin Cruises, a family run business. There are a number of other small shops located in the beach huts and plenty of places to eat and drink. While waiting for the boat we headed for a light lunch. Located next to the Pier was The Fish Shack (booking recommended). Cozy and rustic with views over the harbour. Serving locally caught fish, oysters and daily specials.
There was still a little time before our boat was setting sail so took the opportunity to explore a little more of Amble. It was time to get on to the boat for the 15/20 minute journey over to the Island. It didn't take long before the first Puffin's were spotted. Then they were flying over head in all directions. As we approached the Island we were greeted by the grey seals, which can be seen year round.
During the Summer Coquet Island is home to around 40,000 sea birds, including Puffins, rare Roseate Terns, Kittiwakes, Eider ducks and more. The boat takes you around the island which also has a lighthouse. Built in 1841 it looks a little like a castle rather than a traditional lighthouse. Landing is not permitted due to the protection of the birds.
The trip lasts around an hour and if you are lucky you may spot some Dolphins. If you are in the area it's definitely worth a visit.
Amble is located a 40 minute drive from Newcastle. If you enjoy a walk then there's plenty of quiet beaches, one of which at Low Hauxley (Whats3Words: ///cones.drill.converter) gives you a nice view over to Coquet Island.
